tried to post on your forum thread, but it got locked... what counts as 'fine art' or 'literature' is highly arguable and largely determined by snobbery and intellectual elites. That said, often 'genre' work is not seen as high art. So, 'A passage to india' yes, 'the da vinci code' no, because it's a formulaic thriller. Postmodernism has somewhat blurred the old distinctions between high and low art (already weakened by modernists like james joyce and francis bacon, who prefigured pop art by using advertising and newspaper language film references etc) but those distinctions are still felt by many.

Fantasy as art? why not? The wizard of earthsea is one of the best books around, LOTR, Harry Potter and Star Wars reiterate Joseph Campbells monomyth as well as anything (star wars deliberately -george lucas trained as an anthropologist).
